Big Wow 2013

Things have been crazy (over the last 2 weeks) with moving, changing jobs, changing pretty much everything– and then in the midst of all this there came the Big Wow comics fest in San Jose. To me this event is like a miniature Comic-Con: it has most of the same features, but unlike Comic-Con, you don’t have to practically sell your grandmother in order to get a ticket and, perhaps even more astonishingly, you can attend talks and panels, something which at Comic-Con requires waiting in lines for hours. I went to Big Wow last year and treated it something like prep for Comic-Con. Looking back, I’ve learned alot about the comics industry since I first attended Big Wow last year; and yet I also feel, from where I stand, that I have a ways to go. But learning about the industry, and talking to people and learning about their many experiences, is why I go to these things… That’s my reason to go all the way to San Diego: to experience the intensity and also to be in a place where a certain collection of topics: art/comics/sci-fi/nerdiness/geekery/fiction/writing/characters, are in the forefront of everybody’s mind. I think there’s still a level of communication possible when like-minds are close that’s not possible online, although the internet enables these meetings and is, increasingly, enabling meetings of greater size than even the physical world can yet handle

Cosplayers @ BigWow ’13… These two were awesome…

In some ways, I dread the increase in size of Big Wow, which many agreed is currently in a pleasant equilibrium where there’s still room for more people but there’s now become enough people aware of it to give the event a sense of excitement. And I got alot of great feedback on my first printing of The Hermit, and I was really happy that I had something printed up to hand around. I’ve been trying to decide what project I want to have ready to hand out by the time Comic-Con comes around, and I think I’ve decided what I ought to do is an even nicer version of that pamphlet of dreams (it might be the only thing I have the time to do before July 18). My other option was to draw a few pages of a different project I’ve been working on, but at this current time it seems this will need to wait.
